NEW DELHI, Sep 25: A recent incident of a Garo journalist’s assault in Bangladesh has triggered apprehensions among the media fraternity there.
The journalist, who was reportedly tied to a tree, was also beaten black and blue by one Abdur Rahim Ahmed, president of the Aronkhola Union Council, a government body in the Tangail district in north of Dhaka.
The journalist, who was assaulted on the charges of having destroyed assets worth only about 40,000 Indian Rupee, was, however, saved on time following the intervention of local police, which took him to custody in order to keep him out of harm’s way.
Meanwhile, according to official sources, police have initiated investigation into the incident.
The accused has also filed a lawsuit against another journalist, accusing him of assaulting his driver and maid, stealing, and destroying his property.
The journalist, who works for the Bangladeshi information portal, has, however, categorically denied any wrongdoing.
Local civil society organisations in the area have also stood in support for the journalist.
Only recently, one local organisation ‘Abima Garo’ organised a human chain to protest violence against ethnic Garo journalists, marginalised tribals and others.
It may be mentioned that Edward Mangsang, as part of his work, was investigating issues involving Abdur Rahim Ahmed in corruption cases.
Albeit other journalists had reported the news too, it was Edward Mangsang who was only targeted.
