SHILLONG: The State Election Department will keep an extra vigil on the polling stations located near the Indo-Bangla border as well as the inter-state border.
Informing this here on Saturday, the State Chief Electoral Officer P Naik on Saturday said the polling stations situated near the international and inter-state border would be declared as ‘sensitive’ polling stations.
“We will coordinate with BSF and even the state police to ensure free and fair polling in these polling stations,” he said.
It may be mentioned that even the BSF has strengthened its vigil along the Indo-Bangla border in view of February 23 Assembly election.
Even the senior BSF officers have been deployed along the Indo-Bangla border and mobilization of forces is going on, sources said.
With elections slated for February 23, activities of militant outfits in Garo Hills seem to be on the rise and the and every efforts is being taken to ensure that there is no trouble in any polling stations.
It may be mentioned that altogether 443 kilometers of Indo-Bangla border within the Meghalaya sector is manned by nine battalions of BSF.
Naik also asserted that no individual would be allowed to indulge in dual voting
Some electorate in 2009 Umroi Bye polls had admitted before the media that they are dual voters and their names were there in poll roll of Assam as well as Meghalaya.
The number of enrolment this year has increased two-fold as compared to 2008 with over 1 lakh new voters out of which 45,000 are young voters
