National Voters’Day to be observed

SHILLONG: The march of people with thousands of lights on January 22 will mark the preparation for the National Voters’ Day in Shillong to be held on January 25.

With the Meghalaya going to polls on February 23, the East Khasi Hills District Administration has launched the innovative means to create awareness among the voters to get their maximum participation for polling.

The march known as ‘Nights of a 1000 lights’ will be participated by different durbars, youth organisations, Church organisations, Traditional Institutions, Mothers’ Union and will begin from their respective localities on January 22 at 4pm and will culminate at the State Central Library, Shillong.

Later, the participants will also compose Phawars which will be recited at the State Central Library. The Phawar should be composed and recited in English and Khasi only and prizes will awarded to the Best Phawar.

Besides this, the office of the State Chief Electoral Officer and the District Administration will also organise other programmes from January 19 onwards with an aim to encourage the young voters for polling. Programmes include the Run for Justice, painting competition, essay competition and online quiz competition with 93.5 Red FM daily from 5 to 7pm.

‘The District Administration has tried various innovative methods in the past to encourage the young voters for enrollment and now the focus is on the actual voting’, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said.
