Sec 144 imposed in North Garo Hills

TURA: In view of the Election Commission’s declaration of the general elections to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, 2013, the District Magistrate of North Garo Hills, W Khyllep, placed an order under section 144 Cr.PC, prohibiting certain activities with immediate effect, to ensure free, fair and peaceful conduct of elections.

The electorate of Meghalaya will go to polls on February 23, 2013 as the term of State Legislative Assembly expires on March 10, 2013.

The order, prohibits activities like wall writing, pasting of posters or defacement of any form on government premises, displaying of flags and banners in private premises without written permission of the owner, displaying of flags and stickers in private vehicles and display of flags and stickers on commercial vehicles unless such vehicles are validly used for election campaign during the entire election process in the district.

Moreover, the District Magistrate has prohibited activities which may aggravate existing differences, create mutual hatred, cause tension between different castes, communities or religious or linguistic groups and also activities which are corrupt practices or electoral offense such as bribery, undue influence, intimidation of voters, presonation, etc.

Further, use of loudspeakers whether static or mounted on moving vehicle(s) either before 6 am or after 10am without prior written permission of the authority concerned and disturbances in public meetings or processions organized by other political parties or candidates have been prohibited.

NONGSTOIN: The District Magistrate WKH has promulgated Section 144 CrPC, whereby carrying and displaying of licensed arms by individuals or groups has been banned during the electio period in the entire district.
