JOWAI: Jaintia Hills Police have arrested a person for allegedly raping and then brutally assaulting a 28-year-old woman, who is a mother of three children, at Mookaiaw village, Jaintia Hills on Friday.
The incident occurred at around 1:30 pm at a jungle near the village when the victim had gone there to collect firewood.
Sources informed that the accused, Heimonmiki Suchiang of Mookaiaw village, who was in an inebriated state, approached the victim, who was his neighbour, and raped her. He later tried to kill her with a Khasi Dao (machete) she had brought with her to cut firewood.
On hearing of the incident, a mob caught him and assaulted him before handed him over to Raliang Police.
The victim was admitted to Jowai Civil Hospital in a critical condition with severe injuries on her head and other parts of her body. She was later rushed to Woodland Hospital in Shillong from where she was referred to NEIGRIHMS.
