SHILLONG, Oct 24: An open letter has been shot off to the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, intended to apprise him of the “pathetic” condition of National Highway 6 and the problems caused to the residents of Jaintia Hills.
“As a responsible citizen, I would like to apprise you of the problems faced by the people of the Jaintia Hills region due to the pathetic condition of the National Highway-6 connecting Shillong to Silchar, Assam. This particular road is the lifeline of Jaintia Hills region and the rest of the state,” president of Seiñ Raij Jowai, OR Shallam, said in the letter.
Stating that the road has potholes on at least 80 per cent of the entire stretch, the letter mentioned that the road remains unattended and is presently in the worst condition. “With the traffic jams and road blocks exceeding hours and hours, the public are left with hardships and facing unconditional problems obstructing the normal transportation and conveyance of the commuters,” Shallam said.
The letter alleged that Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, is busy attending party meetings in other states while the people are suffering, and sought the intervention of the Union minister for renovation of the road.
