SHILLONG: Former Chief Minister and sitting Jirang legislator J Dringwell Rymbai has resigned from the UDP.

Confirming this here on Monday, Rymbai said he had submitted his resignation letter to the party president Dr Donkupar Roy on January 18.

“I left the letter at his official residence since the party president was out of station,” said the sitting legislator from Jirang.

When asked if he would also resign as an MLA, he ruled out any possibility saying “I have been elected by people.” The former Chief Minister will now campaign for Wallambok Mylliemngap, an independent candidate from Jirang Constituency.

Wallambok is the son of a prominent city-based businessman Modrik Nongkynrih.

The former Chief Minister, also, ruled out the possibility of returning to the Congress party. “I would have no association with any political party since I have already decided to retire from active politics,” Rymbai added. Rymbai had also resigned as chairman of the Meghalaya Economic Development Council.
