Shillong, Nov 1: Meghalaya were involved in a tough fight with Manipur in the Women’s Senior One Day Trophy, with the latter winning on the day by 39 runs in Kolkata.
Manipur won the toss and chose to bat first in the Plate Group match. Thanks to some solid contributions from several batters, Manipur was able to post 228/6 in their allotted 50 overs.
Meghalaya had to do without regular captain Debasmita Dutta, as she picked up an injury in yesterday’s sensational win against Bihar, so the team was led by her deputy, Daiaka Warjri.
As was the case yesterday, Meghalaya used nine bowlers, with four being among the wickets. Pinky Chanda finished with the best figures of 2/36, while Deiphibapynshngain Lyngdoh Mawnai also picked up a brace (2/47).
Riticia Nongbet got her first wicket of the tournament (1/23), while Ajima Sangma (1/39), who is proving to be highly consistent, added another to her tally, which now stands at eight scalps in three games.
The chase saw five Meghalaya batters get into double figures, led by guest player Vaincy Chaudhary, who top-scored with a fine 64 that included five boundaries.
For a change, she came in at number four and the position appeared to suit her, while, at the top, Luiza Tamang struck 24.
Lower down the order, Solina Jaba chipped in with 23. The other players to get past 10 runs were Warjri (13), Lyngdoh Mawnai (12) and Neha Hajong (12). However, their efforst were in vain as Manipur bowled Meghalaya out for 189 in 43.2 overs to claim a 39-run victory.
Meghalaya will now get a full day’s break before being in action against Nagaland on Wednesday.
