SHILLONG: Two days after a reported case of violence in the run up to the Assembly election at Pynthorumkhrah leaving one Centenial Son Rumnong (22) injured, the father of the victim on Tuesday clarified that the assault had no connection with the election process in Pynthorumkhrah constituency.

The father of the victim, GE Rynjah stated that the reports about poll-related violence were baseless since the assailants were not residents of Pynthorumkhrah but a group of boys from Wahingdoh who frequent the locality and create nuisance.

Rynjah clarified that his son was returning from Church on Sunday at around 8.30 pm when a group of 25-30 boys from Wahingdoh, who were in an inebriated condition, surrounded Rumnong near St. Nanak School, Pynthorumkhrah and attacked him.

“In the last 20 years there have been no such cases of violence in the run up to the election in the constituency and my son’s assault case cannot be summed up as a violence case in the run up to the Assembly election,” Rynjah said.

Reiterating that neither AL Hek nor PT Sawkmie (the candidates) had anything to do with the assault case, Rynjah said he had decided to take the accused to the court since all the accused would often create nuisance in Pynthorumkhrah and action had to be taken against them.

Rynjah also stated that he had rejected a proposal by the parents of the accused for a compromise.

Rynjah also informed that the Dorbar Shnong had in the past issued warnings on several occasions but the ruckus have persisted.

Speaking on the condition of his son, Rynjah said that Rumnong had suffered injuries on many parts of his body including his face.
It may be noted that police have arrested seven persons – Sunny Basaiawmoit, Pynshailang Swer, Bahunlang Khongsngi, Phakos Kharshong, Donald Khongsngi, Donald Syiemlieh and Rockyland Swer – in connection with the case.
