SHILLONG, Nov 17: A day after the chief ministers of Meghalaya and Assam visited Langpih, one of the disputed interstate border areas, Rambrai Jyrngam MLA, Kimfa Marbaniang, has lamented that visits were not made to areas that require similar attention.

Smelling a rat, he said Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s visit to Langpih with his Assam counterpart could either be a genuine intent to resolve the vexed border issues or just a political stunt ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections.
Venting grief, he rued how the MLA and MDC from the area were not officially invited to the programme.
The chief ministers should have visited other adjoining areas like Ummali and Mawdiangsnam that frequently witness disputes, Marbaniang said.
“But they only came, held a meeting and left without visiting the important places. What Assam has claimed is far too big, by the looks of it, the talks may even reach nowhere,” he added.
The MLA contended if the state government was serious in resolving the interstate border dispute, it would have notified the regional committees to take people’s viewpoint.
