NONGSTOIN, Dec 5: Alleged irregular power supply and daily power outages in Shallang and Rengdim area under Mawshynrut Civil Sub-Division of West Khasi Hills have compelled a local group, United A.chik Youth Federation (UAYF), West Khasi Hills, to move Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, in-charge Power, to complain about the matter.
In a complaint letter to Tynsong and local MLA Gigur Myrthong, the UAYF pointed out that Shallang is the commercial hub of West Khasi Hills and is surrounded by approximately 300 villages that depend heavily on electricity.
Informing that business establishments, varied shops as well as students of the areas are highly dependent on power supply, the group lamented that these stakeholders experience daily power cuts in Shallang areas as well as its adjoining areas.            Moreover, the group said that villages such as Rengdim, Nengdawak, Matchok kan’ram, Wakpangram, Bokchung, Khalu A and Khalu B, Khalu (Garo Hills), Rongtok, Rengchi, Rangram, Seningkri and Goreng A village, among others have been living without power supply for more than nine months.
“The headmen and villagers have informed the concerned SDO of Riangdo, MePDCL sub-station under West Khasi Hills, but in vain,” the group said.
It also pointed out that high electricity bills are served to the locals in these areas despite the power woes.
