SHILLONG, Dec 7: Raising concern over frequent accidents taking place across that state, some that even result in the loss of precious lives, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has said that the district administration or the Police department is free to engage any agency to study the reasons behind the occurrence of these road accidents.
“We have witnessed in the last few months that road accidents are frequently reported across the state. Many precious lives are lost in these road accidents, which is unfortunate,” Rymbui said while speaking to reporters here on Tuesday.
The Superintendent (Traffic) of East Khasi Hills has directed department officials to conduct regularly checking of vehicles that move in high speeds, and to particularly keep a check on drunk driving, the minister said.
He also stressed that the Police department needs to educate the public and create awareness on road-safety norms.
Meanwhile, he said that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has also taken strong cognizance with regard to the increase in the number of road accidents on the national highways.
“It is for this reason the ministry had identified the accident-prone areas. It also taking necessary correction and steps to reduce the number of cases of road accidents on the national highways,” the home minister added.
