Police arrest highway robbers
TURA, Dec 11: Police teams from Songsak police station and Dagal police outpost have busted a criminal gang for allegedly robbing a traveller who was passing through the highway between North Garo Hills and East Garo Hills on Friday. The arrested criminals belonged to a five-member gang and had robbed on a traveller at Songkama around 6 pm. The criminals decamped with the victim’s money, mobile phone and other valuables. Police, after being alerted about the dacoity, immediately launched an operation in the area, leading to the arrest of three members of the group from Gabil Bisa Rongmil village. Two other gang members, who were also from the same village, however, managed to abscond under the cover of darkness.

Extortionists nabbed in GH
TURA, Dec 11: Another breakthrough has been made by East Garo Hills police that jointly launched operations with their counterparts from North Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills in the border belt of Hahim area (North), leading to the arrest of two extortionists who had recently served a demand note of 50 lakh to a businessman from Mangsang town. The criminals had used the name of disbanded outfit, GNLA, to issue the demand note. The criminals had asked the businessman to come with the money to Hahim Bazaar, located in West Khasi Hills bordering Assam, but were intercepted by a police team during the extortion bid.

Meeting on sustainable tourism
SHILLONG, Dec 11: The Meghalaya Sustainable Development Council (MSDC) on Friday organised a meeting on tourism traffic and its impact on sustainable tourism. The meeting, held at the Durbar Hall of Mawsmai village, under Sohra Civil Sub-Division, was conducted with the objective to highlight and address the impact of tourist footfall on the environment and ensuring that the beauty and cleanliness of Sohra is preserved. Illustrating the methods by which waste in modern day can be converted into wealth, IAS Ravi Kant gave a presentation on waste management. Concerning the several issues around the impact of tourism in a sustainable context, an open discussion with the stakeholders of this sector was also held. The meeting was attended by MDC T Dkhar, Chairman, MSDC Hector Marwein, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo, officials from various departments in the Sohra Civil Sub-Division, hoteliers, headmen, stakeholders of the tourism sector, among others.
