SHILLONG, Dec 13: The District Transport Officer, East Khasi Hills issued a directive on Monday asking drivers of local taxis, auto rickshaws and buses to avoid overcharging from passengers and to adhere to the fares as notified by the state government on January 13.
The order comes in the wake of complaints that cabbies in the city have been charging inflated fares from passengers. The abnormal rise in fuel prices in the past few weeks coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic and the sitting restrictions in passenger vehicles has become a ploy for cabbies to demand high fares.
The DTO has written to local taxi associations, ordering them to display their vaccination status and carry the rate book in the vehicle. The DTO also encouraged the public to lodge complaints if they encounter instances of overcharging.
