SHILLONG, Dec 14: The Opposition Congress on Tuesday urged the state government to permit holding of Christmas carols and other related programmes as part of this year’s celebrations by relaxing COVID-19 protocols in the state.
With the Christmas spirit around the corner and the festive mood of the season, Shillong City Congress Committee (SCCC) president, PT Sawkmie, urged the government to ease this year’s Christmas celebrations by relaxing COVID protocols.
“We understand that the government last year had not allowed holding of Christmas carols due to the pandemic. But we have seen all other religious festivals were celebrated this year without any kind of problem. I earnestly urged upon the state government to allow the people of the state to celebrate this year’s Christmas in a befitting manner,” Sawkmie said.
Pointing out the state government has relaxed the norms by allow gathering of a large crowd during the recent Cherry Blossom Festival, he said, “We ask the state government to allow holding of carols, Christmas feast and other related programmes”.
Sawkmie urged the government to issue a special notification permitting the people to go to church and to take part in other Christmas celebrations close to normal.
