Bangalore: The entire opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council on Friday staged a walkout protesting against the government’s move to seek passage of a bill providing for setting up of a Private University.

The Bill, introduced by Higher Education Minister C T Ravi, was vehemently opposed by both the JD(S) and Congress members. Leader of the Opposition S R Patil said there was no need for seeking the passage of the bill in haste without adequate time given to members to read the details.

B S Horahatti (JD-S) also was against the passage of the legislation that provided setting up of Vaidehi University which had over nine institutions and with more than 2000 students studying in Medical, Dental, Engineering and other streams. It was also running educational institutions in Chitoor in Andhra Pradesh.

He said the institutions being run by were a fraud and the students had gone on agitation against various malpractices. Similar views were echoed by other members including B J Puttaswamy former minister and KJP leader.

Replying to the debate Mr Ravi reiterated that there was no ‘hanky-panky’ involved in the measure and there was no criminal case registered against the promoter of the University D K Aadhikeshavalu.

He highlighted the need for creating more private institutions to enable greater opportunities to students. (UNI)
