Security beefed up in Nagaland ahead of Assy polls

Agartala: Security has been beefed up in Nagaland with Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMF) moving to the states for holding assembly election after storing polled EVMs at strong rooms in Tripura on Friday evening.

Police officials here on Saturday stated that the CPMF and state armed police personnel of Kerala, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Mizoram had departed after Friday’s lunch from 17 places of the state by road.

The state government had provided as many as 3,400 vehicles of different categories including big buses for their movement. A few of the companies have started Saturday morning to the neghibouring states where election is to be held on February 23.

Besides, state police Election Commission (EC) had engaged about 26,000 paramilitary personnel for holding peaceful election to the state assembly and it ended peacefully barring some stray incidences.

The forces had come to Tripura via Guwahati from early this month and they were put in different schools and public buildings, officials said adding that because of early deployment of CPMF the election there was not much incidences of pre-poll violence.

However, there were a few reports of post poll violence in South Tripura and eastern part of Agartala.

Police said as many as six incidents of post poll violence were reported from different parts of the state and 18 people of both CPI-M and Congress were injured.

Only 1,500 CPMF personnel remained in the state to guard the strong rooms, set up in all 23 sub-divisions where counting of the polled EVMs would begin on February 28 morning at a time. (UNI)
