SHILLONG, Dec 26: The United Democratic Party (UDP) believes that the latest political developments in the state are putting it at an advantageous position ahead of Assembly elections in 2023.
“I can’t predict what will happen in 2023 but these developments will be a big advantage for us to consolidate ourselves as a strong regional force,” UDP general secretary, Jemino Mawthoh told reporters on Sunday.
He was reacting to reports that the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) is trying to create a strong bond with the UDP.
According to sources, the AITC is trying to build a good rapport with the UDP considering the latter could play a crucial role in the formation of the next government.
Mawthoh said, “AITC is a new party. It is old wine in a new bottle and now, it is getting very interesting.”
He said the UDP is optimistic about making it big in the Assembly polls. The party is increasing in terms of numbers as more and more people joined it after it won three by-elections. The associate members are also joining the party, he asserted.
“While we are increasing in numbers, others are decreasing. It is a good trend for the UDP,” Mawthoh said.
Talking about the defection of 12 Congress MLAs to the AITC, he said the Congress is revengeful as evident from its filing of disqualification petitions against the defectors.
