SHILLONG, Jan 5: Music maestro Neil Nongkynrih, who died prematurely in Mumbai on Wednesday, was not just celebrated cultural icon of Meghalaya, but perhaps internationally best known Indian music composer of his genre.
His singular achievement was the remarkable transformation of some of the youth next door to internationally acclaimed singers. Shillong Chamber Choir, which is synonymous with Nongkynrih, made waves under his able tutelage.
Nongkynrih, Founded Shillong Chamber Choir single-handedly, fondly known as ‘Neil’ to all, became a living legend by taking choir music to newer heights.
He was the life force of the Choir. A towering personality, whose music through the choir that he so fondly nurtured and built, earned a reputation of fame among the biggest names in the world of sports, culture, business, music and the film fraternity.
Drawing from the music of his land and his personal stint with the Western classical tradition form; what he gave to classical Indian film music was a gift, bringing delight to millions in India.
In 2010, he led his choir to showcase their aptitude only to win the prestigious India’s Got Talent, thereby catapulting the budding Shillong unit to national and international stardom. Winning many accolades, in 2015, Nongkynrih was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, for his contributions in the field of music.
In development of his sudden demise, the choir along with its admirers and well-wishers around the world mourn this irreparable loss.
