Four-day awareness programme on JJM kicks off in Tura

TURA, Jan 11: The four day residential awareness cum sensitization programme on Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) “Har Gar Jal” for community level stakeholders kicked off on Tuesday at SMELC, Tura. Organized by the Salt Lake Institute of Engineering & Management (SLIEM) in coordination with the PHE department the programme is meant especially for the village water & sanitation committee (VWSC) and other rural local bodies (RLB).

 

The programme aims at creating opportunities for the community to asses, plan, implement, design, monitor and manage the functional household tap connections that have been provided or will be to each and every family unit under the JJM. It also aims to provide safe and adequate quantity of drinking water on a sustainable basis through water quality management & surveillance. The four day awareness and training programme intends to instill the ownership of the water resources within the community and work in unity towards its conservation and maintenance.

 

During the programme resource persons will disseminate awareness and impart training on various aspects of JJM and water resource management through presentations, interactions, focus group discussions and theme based role play.

 

Addressing the gathering during the inaugural session West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh said that the Government of India’s initiative to put up agencies to impart capacity building training to stakeholders at village level was an opportunity for everyone. Speaking on the destruction of water catchment areas the DC asserted that stakeholders needed to plant trees near catchment areas to ensure availability of drinking water. He later urged the JJM functionaries to create awareness on waste water management and other aspects of water resource management.
