Sangma was re-elected during the party’s general body meeting held here.
“I am humbled and grateful to be re-elected as national president of the National People’s Party. Thank all our party members for reaffirming their trust in my leadership. Each member has a significant role to play in our collective mission as a party. We are stronger together,” the chief minister said after his re-election.
Conrad also released the NPP calendar for 2022, commemorating the 75th birth anniversary of his late father and former Lok Sabha Speaker, Purno A Sangma.
NPP national spokesperson Abhaya Kashyap and state president and Rajya Sabha member, WR Kharlukhi defended the allegations leveled against the NPP-led MDA Government.
Kashyap said the “party’s DNA” stands against criminalization of politics and especially against those who commit crime against women and children.
“The party’s DNA stands for clean politics and this is from the time of late PA Sangma who believed in clean politics,” he said.
The NPP leaders also defended the election of Thomas Sangma as the new national general secretary of the party. Sangma is accused of raping a woman and a case in this regard is pending with the High Court of Meghalaya.
Reacting to a query, both the NPP leaders maintained that no action can be taken until he is proven guilty.
On party leader Nidamon Chullet, who is accused of grievously hurting CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing and another activist, Kharlukhi said that the day he is proven guilty, he will be out of the party.
Kharlukhi also downplayed the need for an independent probe into allegations of illegal coal mining as claimed by AITC leader, Mukul Sangma. The NPP leader asked journalists to take the questions to Mukul and added that the 2023 Assembly polls will be a test for the new entrant — AITC.
