Guwahati, Jan 22: Assam chief mnister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday dedicated a cath lab of Silchar Medical College Hospital (SMCH) to the service of the people besides inaugurating a 50-bed resident doctors’ hostel at the hospital.
The cath lab, established at a cost of Rs 5.39 crore in the department of cardiology will be helpful for treatment of patients with cardiac diseases.
The residents doctors’ hostel built at a cost of Rs 7.05 crore will fulfil the long pending needs of the on-duty resident doctors of SMCH.
Speaking on the occasion, Sarma said that with the new facilities, healthcare at Barak Valley will become more accessible, affordable and advanced.
“Patients with cardiac issues will now be able to get state-of-the-art treatment in Barak Valley without having to go to any far off places,” the chief minister said.
He also said that work was going on at full pace to build another 500-bed enclosure on the premises of SMCH which would pave way for the hospital’s capacity upgrade.
The chief minister also informed that land has already been allotted for setting up a dental college, work for which would start this year itself.
Affirming the government’s commitment to the fast-paced development of Barak Valley, Sarma said several steps have been taken for the development of education, health, communication of the valley.
He further said that land a tea estate has been earmarked for the capacity expansion of the airport in Silchar. A decision to this effect will be taken in the next Cabinet meeting.
