SHILLONG, Jan 22: In a bid to register their protest against the violent attack that took place in Lumdiengjri recently, a section of the citizens will organise a sit-in protest at Police Bazar from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday.
The protest, as quoted by the organisers, will be held to seek the government’s immediate intervention in penalizing the culprits under the requisite law.
The protest aims to highlight “the lives of minorities in the state” and the constant threat and fear under which they live.
Notably, on January 20, eight individuals were attacked by unknown miscreants in Lumdiengjri area, right opposite to the Lumdiengjri Police Station. Out of the eight people, three were hospitalised with serious injuries while one, Chandan Paul, claimed he had been stabbed by the assailants.
Condemnation
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Gorkha Parishang, Meghalaya Chapter, has strongly condemned the attack.
The general secretary of the group, Homnath Gautam, said that this “act of terror is meant to create an atmosphere of fear in the minorities’ communities of the state from 1979 till date”. “Police need to properly investigate into the matter and perpetrators of such cowardly acts need to be punished as per the law of Indian constitution,” he said.
