New Delhi, Jan 22: Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla on Saturday recalled the exemplary contributions of his predecessors, especially the late PA Sangma, stating that he will always be remembered as Meghalaya moves ahead on its path of development.
Sangma had served in the post from 1996 to 1998. He was elected to Lok Sabha several times and was never defeated.
“Citizen-centric governance should be our goal as it is the only way to ensure inclusive growth in the state,” Birla said on the occasion of Meghalaya’s year-long golden jubilee celebration of statehood.
He congratulated everyone in the state on this joyful occasion. The Centre formulated a comprehensive action plan for development and tourism and Meghalaya could become one of the most developed states in the next 25 years, the LS Speaker said. Dedicated efforts have been made during the past several years for the development of infrastructure in Meghalaya and collective efforts are needed to strengthen its tourism sector, he said.
He also said that the ongoing celebration in the state assumes more significance as the country is celebrating “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”.“It is a matter of happiness for us that within 50 years of attaining statehood, Meghalaya has made substantial progress in various sectors,” Birla said.
Meghalaya is one of the most beautiful states and it is the most important tourist destination in the Northeast, he said. Owing to its rich biodiversity and culture, it has always been a centre of attraction for the tourists, he added.
