SHILLONG, Jan 23: Three pressure groups — Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) Khasi Hills Zone, All Khasi Hills Achik Federation (AKHAF) and Garo Students’ Union (GSU) Dangar Regional Unit, held a meeting to demand of the police to arrest the people responsible for the purported murder of Sephal R Marak (56) from Weisohpieng village in Mawsynram, East Khasi Hills.
The groups have also called upon the state government to provide compensation to the family of the deceased.
The meeting was presided over by the Headman of the village, Pranesh Sangma, and attended by leaders of the groups and residents of the village.
In the meeting, villagers could be seen with placards depicting their demands. They also partook in a candlelight vigil which was attended by the family members as well to pay their respects to the departed soul.
According to the family, 56-year-old Sephal was murdered while he was returning home from Chirakata to Weisohpieng on the evening of December 12 last year.
Speaking at the meeting, president of AHAM, Labius Arengh asked the police to arrest the culprits at the earliest. “We would also like to urge upon the government to provide compensation to the family members who have lost their father who was their lone bread earner,” he said.
