SHILLONG: GNLA chief Champion Sangma’s ongoing trial in the court is expected to take another six months for completion.

Sangma was produced in the court on Wednesday and during the day two more witnesses were examined by the court.

Government Prosecutor IC Jha on Wednesday told media persons that altogether 21 witnesses are to be examined by the court in relation with the case.

According to Jha, out of the 21 witnesses, 7 witnesses have been examined while 14 others are yet to be examined.

“In my opinion, the case should take six months more,” he told reporters, while adding, “We are trying to examine at least two witnesses on a single day.”

The Government Prosecutor also informed that they are trying their best to see that the trial is held within every 14 days.

The GNLA leader who is currently lodged at the Shillong district jail got the Meghalaya Preventive Detention Act (MPDA) jolt just before the Assembly election as he was all set to the contest the polls.

Under the MPDA, a person can be detained for a maximum of three years and the accused can get bail only after an Advisory Board chaired by a retired Judge gives a decision on the matter.

Champion Sangma, a former Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) left the State Police and floated the militant outfit Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in 2009 which has unleashed a reign of terror in many parts of Garo Hills and certain parts of West Khasi Hills.

The next trial of the case will be held on March 13.
