Police eye soon across Shillong: Govt

SHILLONG, Jan 27: At a time when cases of hate crimes are being reported unabated across parts of Shillong, the state government has assured that surveillance on the city will soon be augmented.
The Meghalaya Government, under the Shillong Smart City project, plans to build Integrated Command & Control Centre, the work for which has been already allotted.
Elucidating further on the Integrated Command & Control Centre, Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Thursday said that under this mechanism, digital cameras will be installed and even a control unit will be set up via which police will manage safety and surveillance across the city.
Dhar also informed that the work on Laitumkhrah market and the construction of Commercial Complex at Polo is going on smoothly. These projects are expected to be completed in one or two years, he said, adding that he will soon conduct inspection of the projects.
“There are 45 projects which are on track; it will take one or two years to complete these projects,” he said.
The state government is also contemplating constructing a smart city road in Shillong, covering a length of 6 km.
A smart road entails widening of roads in some stretches besides installing street lights and laying water pipelines and electric wires underground. A smart road will also have proper facilities for pedestrians.
Some localities where the construction of these smarts road are being contemplated are Traverse Lane, Bivar Road, Keating Road, PWD Secretariat Hill Road, Umsohsun Road, Police Bazaar Road and Thana Road.
Meanwhile, according to Dhar, there is another proposal of Waste Water Treatment through in-situ Nallah Treatment Technology at various locations in Shillong.
Under the Shillong Smart City project, the government also plans to build a parking lot in Motphran besides modifying and retrofitting the existing parking lot in Anjalee and there are plans to build some more parking lots in areas like Polo, Secretariat Hills and Barik junction.
