SHILLONG: Nihim D Shira is the only NPP candidate apart from James Sangma to emerge victorious in the recently concluded Assembly election in the State.

It was not easy for Shira, who was elected for the first time in 2008 on an NCP ticket, to emerge as the winner again keeping aside problems like militancy and anti incumbency.

Shira was elected for the first time in 2008 Assembly elections on an NCP ticket.

Out of the total 53 polling stations in Songsak from where Shira contested the election and won, 48 were hyper sensitive on account of the activities of the militants. Besides GNLA, ANVC and ANVC (B) are active in many parts of Garo Hills.

Moreover, anti incumbency against sitting legislators was another factor which stood in the way of easy victory. Despite all odds, Shira emerged victorious and the reason according him was that he was never complacent.
