SHILLONG: MPCC working president Deborah Marak, who was elected from Williamnagar in East Garo Hills, on Monday said she was open for any probe on the allegations by her opponents that she won the seat with the support of militants.
After GNLA militants tried to disrupt an election rally of Independent candidate, Jonathone N Sangma, he had lodged a complaint with the Williamnagar District Electoral Officer saying that the GNLA had sent letters to some villages asking people not to vote for him but instead they should support Congress candidate Deborah Marak.
However, Marak said she was willing to have any inquiry on the alleged interference of militants in the election.
“Let anyone do a proper inquiry and I willing to cooperate,” Marak said.
Asked about the use of money power during elections, Marak said that other than the usual expenditure incurred like any other candidate, she did not resort to bribery to get votes.
“Every candidate spends money for their workers in terms of conveyance and other small expenditures and I did not have money to spend beyond the urgent needs,” Marak said.
According to Marak, the people of Williamnagar voted her to power again after her defeat in 2008 election to bring a change in the constituency.
“I got maximum votes from the voters residing in and around Williamnagar town and this shows that they wanted me to be part of the Government to accelerate development,” said Marak, who was elected to the Assembly for the third term.
