SHILLONG, Feb 6: The Seng Khasi Kmie along with Lum Sohpetbneng Committee and the Komiti u Tymmen U San on Sunday undertook the annual pilgrimage to U Lum Sohpetbneng, Ri-Bhoi, to offer obeisance to God.
It may be mentioned that the participation in this year’s pilgrimage was curtailed in view of the COVID-19 situation.
During the pilgrimage, the faithful trekked to the hilltop which, they believe, once had the golden stairs (Jingkieng Ksiar) that connected heaven and earth. However, the golden stairs were broken when sin crept into earth.
According to legends, the subtribes of Khasi race Khynriam, Pnar, Bhoi, War, Maram, Lyngngam and the now-extinct Diko of Meghalaya, are collectively known as Ki Hynniewtrep, which means ‘Seven Huts’, referring to the seven families, the first settlers on earth.
This sacred peak is said to be a repository of ancient wisdom and the fountain head of religious philosophy, which is shrouded in sacredness and sanctity.
Sunday’s prayers and rituals were also attended by the leaders of Sein Raij Shillong and Jowai, and leaders from the various circles of the Seng Khasi.
