SHILLONG, Feb 8: The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), which is now the only opposition party in Meghalaya, sought to position itself as a credible alternative to both the NPP-led MDA and the Congress, terming both parties as “power hungry”.
“The unscrupulous & power hungry people have officially joined hands. This alliance between Congress & NPP led MDA has once again clearly marked AITC as the only credible alternative in Meghalaya,” the party tweeted soon after the development on Tuesday.
AITC state president, Charles Pyngrope was however more placid in his reaction. He said he did not find anything wrong in the decision of the five Congress MLAs to support the NPP-led MDA Government.
“I am sure they will continue to raise issues afflicting the people. We can always raise pertinent issues whether we are in the Treasury or the Opposition,” Pyngrope said.
He hopes that the five Congress MLAs would continue to advise the government on the need to give due weightage to issues concerning the people.
“The Congress MLAs should support the government with regard to pro-people policies, but I also hope that they will continue to object anti-people policies of the government,” he said.
Pointed out that the Congress and the BJP are supporting the coalition government, Pyngrope said the BJP is a “non-entity” in Meghalaya.
“The BJP has not grown in the state over the past many years. They had begun their political journey in Meghalaya with two MLAs. Even now they have two MLAs. Therefore, the support of two BJP MLAs to this government does not make any difference,” the AITC state chief said.
He also refused to term the MDA Government as a pro-BJP government, saying that the party has only two MLAs.
