Tripura likely to set record in MGNREGA again

Agartala: Tripura looks set to top among all the states when it comes employment generation under the national flagship programme-MGNREGA.

Till March 31, the state has already generated 73 mandays on an average in all eight districts and it is expected to generate 90 mandays by the end of current fiscal year-2012-13.

According to an evolution report prepared by Rural Development (RD) Ministry, Mizoram appeared as second best performing state with 61 mandays and followed by Tamil Naidu with 48.32 mandays.

The performance in Goa is very poor- with only 12.4 mandays.

In Assam and West Bengal, the job generation stands at 21.20 mandays and 32 mandays respectively.

RD minister Jitendra Chowdhury said the Centre had approved a labour budget of Rs. 1204.88 crore during 2102 – 13 fiscal year out of which it has released Rs. 767.98 crore till March while the state government released its own share of Rs. 153.33 crore.

“The third installment is expected to receive by the state very soon and labour budget for the next financial year has set 95 mandays as target in average”, he said.

As per the labour budget, the state is supposed to receive Rs. 222 crore as third installment since Rs. 982.69 crore out of total 1204.88 crore was released by the Centre so far.

In the last fiscal year, the state had generated an average of 86 mandays ranking topper across the country in the MGNREGA implementation.

Chowdhury further said the Centre has increased the state outlay under the national flagship programme.

In the year 2012-13, altogether 5 crore mandays were targeted while it has been scaled up to 5.67 crore for the 2013-14 financial year.
