Shillong, Feb 18: A case of illegal coal mining in Meghalaya has surfaced once again with the complaint lodged by the Nokma of Nengchigen village at Shallang police station against illegal coal mining in their clan land while alluding to the presence of armed militants apparently being used to protect those involved in illegal coal mining.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, the acting DGP of Meghalaya Idashisha Nongrang said they have received the copy of the FIR and the case has been registered adding that the police are working on this case besides other mining-related cases in the state.

Reacting to the statement made by AITC leader Dr Mukul Sangma on the coal trade-insurgency nexus, the acting DGP said this is not the first time that allegations were made while asserting that militancy cannot be allowed to raise its ugly head in the state again.

It may be mentioned that an FIR was filed by Nokma of Nengchigen village under Nongstoin Syiemship in West Khasi Hills on February 14 which pointed to the coal trade-insurgency nexus in the coal-rich areas of the state.
