NONGPOH, Feb 24: The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) has suffered a major blow after the party’s top leaders from Nongpoh, Ri-Bhoi, tendered their resignation on Thursday.
These leaders have alleged that the NPP state leadership has sidelined them in terms of allotment of party ticket in Nongpoh.
The NPP had decided to allot the party ticket to Umsning MDC, Macdalyne Sawkmie Mawlong, to contest the upcoming Assembly elections in 2023.
However, leaders from Nongpoh Constituency have accused the party leadership of allotting the ticket to Macdalyne Sawkmie Mawlong without consulting them.
Among hundreds of workers to desert the party includes former CEM of KHADC, CB Syiem, who is also adviser of the party in the constituency, NPP Nongpoh Block president, Augustine Wahlang, block general secretary Tiplem Lymphuid, president of Nongpoh NPP Women Wing, Delis Malai, Adviser Thre Nongrum, organising secretary, Henry Nongrum of Nongpoh NPP Block and secretary of National People’s Youth Front, Durister Klein.
“We cannot tolerate this kind of action by the party’s top leaders. We should have been consulted and discussed thoroughly along with all of our party workers before declaring the party’s ticket to Macdalyne Sawkmie Mawlong, but unfortunately, this is not being followed and accordingly we have decided to leave the party,” the leaders said.
They further questioned the party’s leadership even as it claimed that the alleged sidelining of the functionaries in Nongpoh is a gross violation of the party procedures.
