SHILLONG: The Budget Session of the 9th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will begin from Thursday with the Governor’s Address.

Though there will be only a short session on Thursday, the Opposition Meghalaya People’s Front (MPF) will raise several pending issues in the coming days.

The newly instituted House will miss several figures including Conrad Sangma, Bindo M Lanong and Manas Chaudhuri, who had raised several issues concerning the State during many discussions in the last Assembly.

The Opposition under the banner of Meghalaya People’s Front (MPF) held a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the issues which they would take up during the Budget Session.

UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh said that important issues like the pathetic conditions of roads, urban management, law and order, slow growth rate among others will be raised by the Opposition during the session in the form of questions, motions and resolutions.

The session which begins on Thursday will continue for a week. After a recess, the re assembled session will be held in April.

While the vote on account will be presented in March, the full budget will be passed in April.

Leader of Opposition to be appointed soon

UDP president Donkupar Roy will be appointed as the Leader of Opposition shortly.

The Assembly Secretariat sources said that since the UDP fulfils the amended norm of having six legislators, its leader Roy will be appointed as the new Opposition Leader. This is also in line with the norms in Parliament.

The earlier norm was that a party should have a minimum of 10 legislators for the party to claim the post of Leader of Opposition.
