SHILLONG, March 4: As part of the observance of the National Safety Day, the Department of Tourism and Travel Management of Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) organised a workshop on the topic ‘First Aid in Tourism’ in collaboration with Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital, Shillong, at the university campus on Friday, which was attended by students and faculty of the department.
The medical consultants and staff of the nursing school of Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital facilitated the workshop with sessions that acquainted students with the right methods of administering medical assistance in incidents involving injuries as well as emergency situations.
Demonstrations related to early management of trauma was presented by Dr Banteilang Nonglang (Consultant Orthopedic), toxicology by Sr Bashida Synrem (Assistant Nursing Superintendent), medical and surgical emergency presented by Sr Graceful Lyngdoh (Assistant Prof, College of Nursing) and Basic Life Support (BLS) by Dr Banhiam C Kharrngi (Incharge Emergency and Trauma Care Unit).
The students also had hands-on learning experience on the various demonstrations during the sessions.
Founder of Duia Trailblazers, an adventure tour operation group in Shillong, Gerald Samuel Duia, narrated his experience as a tour operator in certain risky situation, as well as injuries and accidents on the field.
He stressed on the importance of being equipped with first aid knowledge and to be trained about life-saving skills so as to be able to handle and save clients as well as themselves in an emergency situation.
In his address, Additional DM&HO, East Khasi Hills, Dr Shibolleth Khonglah, who was the chief guest stressed on the importance of first-aid training for students of the tourism and hospitality industry.
