SHILLONG: With a full-fledged High Court for Meghalaya all set to be inaugurated on March 25 after a long wait, the State Government expects that this will herald a new chapter in the history of the State as far as speedy disposal of cases is concerned.
The Deputy Chief Minister in charge Law, Rowell Lyngdoh, told The Shillong Times on Saturday that with Justice T Meena Kumari, a Judge of the Patna High Court taking oath on March 23 as the first Chief Justice of the Shillong High Court and the subsequent inauguration of the establishment of first High Court two days later, will help Meghalaya to dispose off the back log of several pending cases.
At present, there is only a Bench of the Gauhati High Court in Shillong.
According to Lyngdoh, there will be several benefits once Meghalaya gets its full-fledged High Court.
This will also accelerate the process of full bifurcation of the Judiciary from the Executive besides opening up many employment opportunities as many judicial officers and other related staff will be appointed, Lyngdoh said.
“Once established, we hope that there will be speedy disposal of several pending cases by the new High Court,” Lyngdoh said.
Many cases, which were supposed to be taken up by the Division Bench of the Gauhati High Court, are also pending awaiting the formation of the High Court.
