SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma will inaugurate the floodlights at the JN Stadium ahead of the formal inaugural match of the Dr T Ao Memorial Football Tournament, to be played between hosts Meghalaya against Arunachal Pradesh, at 4pm.

The floodlights will allow thousands of football fans to enjoy seeing the sport played at night.

“We believe that the football-loving crowd will arrive in large numbers as the lights will be another incentive for them to witness a game at night,” B Diengdoh, organising committee secretary remarked, adding, “This is very good for football in Meghalaya and if more clubs from the state make it to next season’s I-League, it will be a football bonanza that we are looking forward to, as many derby matches will be played here.”

Each of the four towers consists of 44 metal halide lamps of 2,000 watts each and are synchronised electronically. To ensure constant electricity, two powerful 320 KvA generator sets will provide uninterrupted supply.
