SHILLONG: Sohra legislator Titosstarwell Chyne (UDP) has urged the Government to limit the issue of licenses for wine stores in the State.
“It is a matter of great shame that people who visit the State are welcomed by the large number of wine stores line up all along the highway in Khanapara instead of welcome gates,” Chyne said while participating in an amendment motion on the Governor’s Address in the Assembly on Monday.
“This does not project Meghalaya, which is known to be Christian State, in good light. The Government needs to take a hard decision by limiting the issuance of wine store licenses even if the State loses some revenue,” Chyne said in his maiden address in the House.
The UDP legislator also stated that organising a Kite Festival should not termed as an achievement.
“I fail to see any justification in holding such a festival and calling it an achievement of the Tourism department which is reflected in the Governor’s Address,” Chyne said.
The growth of the tourism sector would depend on the development of various tourism infrastructures, he said, and added, “We need to back up the various natural tourist destinations of Sohra with assets which could further attract the visiting tourists.
Chyne also emphasized on the need to declare the Shillong-Sohra road as a national highway, saying that important personalities who come to the State always visit Sohra.
While proposing a police outpost at Mawjrong village, Chyne stressed on the need to press a patrolling team along the route to Sohra to prevent unwanted incidents, especially during the weekends.
The UDP legislator also demanded upgradation of the Sohra Civil Sub-Division into a district.
