SHILLONG: The Opposition on Thursday questioned the Government over the slow implementation of major bridge projects in the State.
While replying to a query raised by UDP MLA Donkupar Roy, PWD (Roads) Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar informed that 28 major bridges have been sanctioned in the State in the last 10 years.
Donkupar questioned the slow implementation of one of the bridges in Shella to which the PWD Minister replied that a case filed on the approach road had stalled the work for the bridge.
The UDP MLA also rued the fact that the State does not have capable contractors when it comes to
construction of major bridges.
“The Government should come out with a separate division for maintenance and construction of such bridges,” he said.
Donkupar was also of the view that there should be a follow up to ensure that the work for the bridges is completed within the stipulated deadline.
Meanwhile, NPP legislator, James Sangma also expressed unhappiness over the slow construction of the bridges and sought an answer on whether any penalty is imposed on the contractors for the delayed progress of the work.
To this, the Dhar replied that penalties will be imposed on contractors in case of unwarranted delays.
