Guwahati: Back from the national capital after scouting Opposition support against a land swap deal with Bangladesh, former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Friday reiterated that his party AGP will continue exploring all means to stall the bill.
Addressing a press conference here, Mahanta said the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) wants proper, exhaustive discussions between the Centre and the North-East state governments before the bill is introduced in Parliament.
The Constitution (119th Amendment) Bill, 2013, seeks to amend the Constitution of India to give effect to acquiring of territories by India and transfer of certain territories to Bangladesh in pursuance of an agreement and its protocol entered between the two countries.
The Bill was due to be introduced in the Rajya Sabha Thursday, but was not done.
Mahanta, the AGP chief and two-time former chief minister, said the party delegation, led by himself, called on top leadership of various parties, including meeting Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, D Raja, Prakash Karat, Sitaram Yechury and Sharad Yadav.
The three AGP members of Parliament will hold talks with leaders of other parties also, he added.
He said the Opposition parties have lent their support to the AGP’s stance against the Bill.
The AGP as well as other Opposition parties have been protesting the land and enclave swap deal between India and Bangladesh, which was decided during the Prime Minister ‘s visit to the neighbouring country last year. (UNI)
