SHILLONG, March 21: In a setback to the United Democratic Party (UDP), KHADC MDC from Mawlai, Teiborlang Pathaw submitted his resignation from the party citing personal reasons.
In his resignation letter addressed to UDP president, Metbah Lyngdoh, the MDC said, “It has been a pleasure working with you and your team over the last three years.”
Though Pathaw cited personal reasons for his move, his decision to quit the party comes after some leaders of the UDP Mawlai Circle proposed the name of sitting MLA, PT Sawkmie as the party candidate from Mawlai constituency for the 2023 Assembly polls.
“The UDP central leadership is yet to take a decision on awarding the party ticket but some leaders from the Mawlai circle have already projected the name of the sitting MLA as the candidate,” Pathaw told reporters.
“Resignation is the best option for me since there is an indication that they want me out of the party. I do not see any merit in remaining in the UDP,” the Mawlai MDC said.
On reports of him joining the NPP, Pathaw said he was undecided on joining any political party and will take a call only after due consultations with his supporters.
