SHILLONG: Taking strong note of the frequent power failures in Garo Hills, the National People’s Party (NPP) has asked the State Government to constitute a ‘House Committee’ to address the problem.
NPP leader and party legislator James Sangma, while addressing a press conference here on Friday, said that a House Committee must be constituted to identify and rectify the root cause of the problem.
The NPP made this demand as Garo Hills often lands up in darkness thanks to frequent power cuts that has affected students who are appearing for the Board examinations.
According to James Sangma, the House Committee would study the working of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) to find out why it has failed to function professionally, and would then submit its suggestions and recommendations to address the issue.
Referring to the statement of the Government on the floor of the House that steps are being taken to ensure uninterrupted power supply, James Sangma asserted that the Government has failed in tackling the situation.
“Going by the frequency of power cuts which has started again today morning, it shows that the government is not serious at all,” he said.
The NPP leader also alleged that the government took the pain to ensure that there is no power cut during elections, but the problem cropped up again after the election was over.
Sangma also mentioned that he was twice disallowed from raising the issue in the Assembly.
