SHILLONG, March 26: Nature, which continues to be incessantly plagued, has started to now smite back at mankind in the form of natural calamities and climate change.
This was said by Forest and Environment James Sangma while releasing a book entitled Withering Forests and Dying Rivers, authored by Environmentalist Naba Bhattacharjee, during a programme here on Saturday.
It may be mentioned that the book not only flags concern over the desecrated environment but also highlights case studies on depleting forest cover, receding catchments of water sources, rapid disappearance of hills, defilement of rivers and water bodies, mining of fossil fuels and ills of harnessing ground water.
The book also accentuates the immediate need to revert to age-old wisdom and traditional mode of conservation.
Addressing the gathering, James said, “The book spells out how, in name of development, we have exploited natural resources and polluted our planet. Today multitude of our flora and fauna are facing dangers of extinction due to selfishness and greed.”
A concerned environment minister went on to quote Mahatma Gandhi and said, “We cannot deny that today humanity is raging war against mother nature and the same is striking back with force and fury from shifting weather patterns, risings sea levels that increase the risk of catastrophe. We are all facing the effects of climate change and global warming at an unprecedented rate.”
Meanwhile, the author informed that his book is an attempt is to make people au courant with the prevalent environmental issues.
