MAWKYRWAT, March 27: In a strong message to the government reiterating their stand on uranium mining, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) asserted that it is better to close the chapter of uranium mining.
In a meeting of the KSU here on Saturday after the general election of the office-bearers of KSU South West Khasi Hills District Unit, general secretary, Donald V Thabah, said, “We have been fighting against uranium mining in South West Khasi Hills for many years now, and we believe that these fights will continue. Therefore, it is the duty of us all to reach out and wake up and make our younger brothers and sisters understand about the dangers of uranium mining and build a strong wall. If the UCIL (Uranium Corporation of India Limited) wanted to mine uranium, it will have to go through each and every member of the union”.
On the other hand, president of the KSU South West Khasi Hills District Unit, Forwardman Nongrem, said that the main issues that new body would tackle include the purported unfair recruitment in government jobs, uranium mining, drugs abuse and influx in the district.
The new office-bearers of the Union’s unit for the term 2022-25 are Forwardman Nongrem (president), Shemphang Nonglang (vice president), Jiedskhem Nongsiej (general secretary), Pulljohn Wanniang (organising secretary), among other members.
