SHILLONG, March 30: The State BJP, while welcoming the resolution of the interstate boundary dispute in six contested areas, has said that it was the duty of the two state governments to ensure that the right of people enshrined under the Sixth Schedule is not violated.
“The MoU is an agreement to resolve the dispute; now the process will begin to implement the agreement officially. However, any discontentment among the people needs to be looked into by the state authorities during implementation of the agreement,” BJP vie-president and Tura MDC, Bernard Marak said on Wednesday.
It may be mentioned that Marak had earlier toured the Garo populated border areas of the state and had expressed unhappiness over the fact that headmen and traditional heads were not consulted in most of the areas during the joint border inspections by the regional committees of both the states.
Meghalaya and Assam on Tuesday finalised the border agreement signed on January 29, 2022, effectively bringing to an end the lingering dispute in six of the 12 areas of differences, prompting the Union government to term it as a “historic day” and a “milestone” for the entire Northeast.
However it has evoked resentment from several quarters in the state and while the opposition expressed that it will spell disaster, the pressure groups have not taken kindly to the finalisation of the border pact and have reiterated their opposition to the give-and-take policy.
