Shillong, April 4: A massive landslide occurred on the Shillong-Pynursla road near Ryngain on April 1 last that has disrupted communication along the road prompting the Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO) to demand for an inquiry into the status of sand mining/quarry at Ryngain area in Pynursla and blasting of huge rocks by the road from Laitlyngkot to Pynursla that often cause landslides in the area.
In a letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of the East Khasi Hills (EKH) district, the CSWO president Agnes Khashiing stated that the NGO had collected evidences of frequent sand mining/quarry activities and blasting of huge rocks in Ryngain area under Pynursla which lead to frequent landslides in the area posing threat to the lives and property of commuters on the National Highway stretch from Laitlyngkot to Pynursla.
The CSWO president has, therefore, urged the Deputy Commissioner of the EKH district to institute an inquiry into sand mining/quarry and rock blasting activities in the area and collect the copy of the sand mining/quarry plan.
The CSWO also urged for inquiry to fund out whether the public hearing was conducted or not before allowing mining activities on the stretch from Laitlyngkot to Pynursla village.
