SHILLONG, April 4: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Meghalaya government and National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, on Monday, which was facilitated by Minister-in-charge of Law, James PK Sangma.
Through this partnership, the PA Sangma Fellowship for Legal and Policy Research, which was recently approved by the state Cabinet, will allow students of NLSIU to undertake research activities in Meghalaya for a holistic experience on the current challenges of law and policy on the ground.
It will also pave way to capacity building and training programmes for law officers and personnel of other departments of the government.
“Starting from research and consultations to implementation and monitoring; governance is indeed a long process,” said Sangma at the event.
“This will be a great learning experience for the fellows because the transition they would have made from the classroom environment to understanding the ground realities of law and policy in implementation is something which is important,” he said.
In his address, Vice Chancellor of NLSIU, Dr Sudhir Krishnaswamy, highlighted the need for providing greater exposure to students, which, according to him, will allow them to gain practical and grounded experience for the future.
Secretary of Law department Cyril V Diengdoh, Registrar NLSIU Dr Nigam Nuggehalli and Course Director Institute of Public Policy Dr Sony Pellissery were also present at the event.
