SHILLONG, April 5: Altogether 15 potential sites are in the pipeline for the proposed scientific landfill in the state, according to Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
This development may come as a silver lining for Jowai, which has been facing huge challenges with regard to disposal of garbage for several months.
The minister on Tuesday said that Jowai Municipal Board has received 15 applications for construction of the scientific landfill. “We will inspect the sites and acquire the best one,” he said.
Stating that the department machinery is working in full swing to identify a permanent site, Dhar, however, revealed that the state government is also looking for a temporary site.
He added that 3-4 places have been identified where the government is creating necessary awareness.
The minister reiterated that no issues will arise from scientific waste management.
It is worth mentioning here that apprehension and speculation run rife in the minds of the people with the idea of setting up of a landfill, and the government has been making attempts to allay the fears by spreading awareness among the public.
Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong had admitted that the government has been unable to dispel people’s apprehensions about scientific landfill. Tynsong had maintained that the technology today is different, while adding that people, regardless, are not willing to part with their land even if the government pays for it.
