Guwahati, April 8: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has celebrated the success of its NET/GATE/JRF qualified students of 2020-2021 at a glorious programme held today where 99 successful students were felicitated under its ‘Pay-Back Policy’.

The function was held at the Central Auditorium of the university. Dharma Kanta Mili, ACS, Director of Higher Education, Govt. of Assam graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while  Arpit Upadhyay, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Ri-Bhoi District, Meghalaya was the guest of honour. The main objective of this Award ceremony was to create competitiveness among the students.

In order to  encourage the students to qualify in NET, GATE, SLET, IAS, or any other top-level competitive examinations conducted by State & Central Govt., USTM has introduced the Pay Back Policy wherein students of the University who qualify in  these prestigious examinations, shall get back their course fees.  Special coaching and guidance facilities are provided for the aspirants of various competitions.

Addressing a gathering of more than 3000 students in the felicitation ceremony today, Director of Higher Education  Dharma Kanta Mili said, “I am glad to know that USTM is now an ‘A’ grade university by NAAC which is quite encouraging. It is not simply the glory of Meghalaya but of the entire North East. USTM’s mission to become a world class university by 2030 is appreciable”. He also expressed his happiness knowing that USTM has instituted number of scholarships in the names of former presidents of Asam Sahitya Sabha.

Arpit Upadhyay, Deputy Commissioner, Ri-Bhoi District who cleared IAS in 2018, delivered a very inspiring speech for the students stating how he cracked the toughest competitive exam in the country in spite of being a mediocre student.

“Always dream big, and set goal which is challenging you, which you need to achieve.  The taste of achieving the target set by you is the most cherishing experience. We should never forget that whatever we are able to achieve in our life is all because of our parents and mentors”, he added. He further expressed his desire to take sessions for UPSC aspirants in USTM.

Speaking on the occasion, Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of USTM said, “We are extremely happy that even during the pandemic period of year 2020 and 2021, students did online classes and fared well in the national level competitive exams.” He said that the university is giving such incentives to students so that students become more competitive and motivated. He also stated that USTM has initiated intensive coaching for competitive examinations under its “Vision50 Academy”.
